Shawn McDermott is an experienced criminal defense attorney that has served the tri-state area for the past ten years.  His passion has made him a successful and veteran criminal defense lawyer dedicated to protecting the rights of American citizens.

Shawn McDermott graduated from Rutgers University in 2002 and attended law school at American University Washington College of Law.  During his time in law school, Shawn developed a passion for defending the rights and upholding the Constitution for clients that society had either forgotten about or shunned by interning with the Innocence Project as well as working with the Federal Public Defender’s office in the death penalty phase of the trial of the alleged “20th hijacker,” Zacarias Moussaoui.

After graduating from Washington College of Law cum laude, Shawn began working for nationally-prominent criminal defense attorney William “Bill” B. Moffitt.  During his mentorship with Bill Moffitt, Shawn sat second chair on numerous high-profile criminal trials and gained invaluable experience in motions practice, appellate advocacy, and trial preparation and presentation.

Through his work with Bill Moffitt, Shawn met Kevin D. Mills, who was Bill Moffitt’s first mentee.  Following Bill’s death in 2009, based on a shared background of being taught the art and practice of criminal defense from the same person and based upon a common belief in the sanctity and protection of citizens’ constitutional rights, Shawn moved to West Virginia and began practicing with Kevin Mills.

During his practice in West Virginia, Shawn has sought to carry forward the principles of zealousness and justice espoused by Bill Moffitt.  Shawn has sat first chair and second chair in numerous jury trials.  Shawn has successfully won appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and argued cases before the West Virginia Supreme Court.

When not vigorously fighting for the rights of his clients and developing novel and cutting edge legal theories, Shawn can be found spending time with his wife, Analiese, and their son, Sebastian and running ultramarathons in the mountains of West Virginia.
